“No legal exemption for ‘honour crimes’” – bla bla bla…

As you can read in Jordan Times and on Kinzi Blogs – there is news on the ‘honour’ killing front in Jordan.

Aparently the courts have started to refuse the defendants’ claims to have their sentences reduced because of “a murder that is committed in a fit of fury caused by an unlawful act on the part of the victim” (Article 98 in the Penal Code).
That is good – even though it has only happened in three cases this year, while we have had 14 (reported) cases of honour killings.

But maybe it is the beginning of a positive change?
One can always hope.

But no fair punishment will ever occur as long as the following scenario is possible:

“Last week, a court halved the jail term of a 29-year-old man who shot his raped sister 12 times “in the name of honour,” but its decision was not based on the man’s claim, according to the verdict, a copy of which was faxed to The Jordan Times.
According to the court document, the judges decided to reduce the sentence of 15 years hard labour by half only because the father dropped charges against the defendant.”

So the father of the murdered woman drop the charges on HIS OWN SON – who comitted the murder! I can’t judge if the father was a part of the plan or not – or maybe the mastermind behind it – but no matter if he was or not – their should be a legal body who would stand up for the murdered woman – making sure that SHE gets justice!
